What began in Room 47 West Range at the University of Virginia in 1868 has endured for 150 years, growing into one of the largest fraternal organizations in North America. The rich history of Pi Kappa Alpha has been documented within the pages of the Shield & Diamond and its predecessor, The Pi Kappa Alpha Journal.

That legacy is unlocked through this digital presentation. This archive contemporaneously documents the history of the Fraternity, incorporating the state of student life and culture on North American campuses where Pi Kappa Alpha has been represented. Therefore, it is important that the reader maintain a historical perspective and exercise a cautious and contextualized interpretation of the data contained herein.

Through the decades, attitudes and social norms have undergone a tremendous evolution. The Fraternity and its members have been subjected to those attitudes and social norms over time, yet (but) have also evolved. Today, Pi Kappa Alpha and its current leadership are committed to carrying out the values of the Fraternity as stated in its Mission, Vision and Creed.

We invite you to step back into history and read about the activities of the Fraternity through the eyes and words of those who experienced them, unedited and unfiltered. In so doing, you will likely gain a greater appreciation of our successes, our failures and the series of events that have led Pi Kappa Alpha to where it stands today. Enjoy.

The Shield & Diamond is available in both print and on-line versions. The subscription policy can be found www.pikes.org.
